Perhaps we could implement both - Players can give their dragons a location using DragonBot, and they can also take full control with their minds (look-to-travel) We should make both available, maybe you could switch between auto pilot and flying by right clicking when in the saddle? I like it! You're starting to think less "command" and more "streamlined gameplay"! :-) Although we might use right click for firing fireballs, or streams of damaging fire particles... We can't use left click as players will need that when using weapons. I'll have to check if Bukkit can listen for the Pickblock key (Default middleclick) Oh, and Dragonfire, yes...

DRAGONFIRE!
Also, so you can modify what certain keys currently do, but can't add new keys? OK. We can work around that! Maybe also you could use the hit/attack key for fire when in manual mode, and when in auto, the dragon just does it on its own when pointed at an opponent. Or we could start using key combinations for less common tasks... Ideas to consider!

Yes, it's true that we can detect certain key presses and mouse events, such as right and left mouse clicks, W, A, S and D, and Spacebar key presses (or whatever is bound as the default controls). It is probably also possible to detect Shift (or crouch) and E (or inventory). It might be possible to detect Tab whilst in chat as Tab requests data from the server... Unless it's getting data that has already been sent to the client.

We should make both available, maybe you could switch between auto pilot and flying by right clicking when in the saddle? That could work! On manual mode you would "be" the dragon, controlling their movement and maybe even attacking/firebreathing. On autopilot mode you can set a destination, it would have auto-evasive maneuvering, and would attack an opponent on occasion without needing prompting. Would it be possible to add a new view mode for riders so they can look through their dragon's eyes? Also, with plugins can you add new button controls? Typing in things like "/dragon auto" could be too time consuming, especially for someone in battle. Instead, adding new controls like "Y" toggling between auto and manual dragon modes would be much smoother. i THINK you could make "dragon vision", and it would be amazing but my hopes will probably be crushed when a dev posts on this.

OMG DRAGON FIRE THIS IS AMZAING!!! I think that dragon fire shouldnt set fire to blocks easily as we have /dofiretick false and its a pain in the ass to put out, but still, awesome!

That would be very cool! But yes devs seem to shoot down a lot of our ideas... understandeable but disappointing.

Although we could probably implement a new viewpoint by moving the player to the Dragon's head and maybe turning on a specific SuperSecretSetting shader, if that's possible to do serverside...

Well, for manual control mode you wouldn't really NEED dragon vision, and it might actually be disorienting...
