So I was thinking that it would be cool to have some way to fight into someone's mind to gain control of them and stop any spells or such that they might be doing. This would also be a system to defend your mind. It could work something like one player initiates it and then a competition of concentration takes place. I was thinking maybe clicking as fast as possible or typing sentences quickly. This system could also take into account each person's strength.
On on a similar note, I was thinking about some game mechanic where if you meditate for a certain period of time, the server returns all of the players, animals, and mobs in the area in order of distance, as well as whether they are hostile or not. Also, the longer you meditate, the farther of a distance you can sense, up to a certain distance determined by your strength.
You could use these two functions in conjunction to find and overcome enemy players.

Or how about this... When a player initiates a mental battle, both players are teleported to a tiny "mind" arena. Both inventories are wiped and the players are given equal gear, such as a wooden sword and leather. If a certain player's mind is stronger than the other player, they will get certain buffs such as sharpness I, strength I or resistance I, depending on what area their mind is stronger. The players will battle it out until one player kills the other. At this stage, both players are teleported back to their original locations and their inventories restored.
The player who wins (the player who kills the other) is granted access to the other's mind for a short period of time. The winning player can control most of the loosing player's movements and chat, however the loosing player can still fight back by counteracting these movements. This could cause the body to move slower than usual or chat coming out slurred/obfuscated. The winning player is vulnerable while they are controlling the loosing player. If the winner is attacked by anything during this time, they will receive a message telling them that their own body is being attacked. They can then choose to stop controlling their victim and return to their own body if they wish.
Players can also research techniques to evade mind-control altogether. You cannot initiate a mind-battle with a player who has this skill.

Because then you could quickly do "deyja" as a suicide command to kill the player through their mind.
Also, what do you think about the meditation idea? It could help you find all the entities around you and find people to whisper to through the chat like talking in their mind.

I believe that wouldn't be too intensive and cause a lot of lag, correct me if im wrong

Maybe you could limit it to certain entities as an option, like /meditate player would just return players in order of distance, or /meditate creeper would return the number of creepers and their distance.

I LOVE all of these ideas. we really should implement them!but in terms of fairness, we need to make it so that one really experienced player cant just run around killing everyone with their mind. one way to do this is to be able to "team" up in mental combat, like Eragon and Saphira do, or Eragon and arya do. this would mean that riders would be much stronger in mental combat (they have a dragon) and weaker adventuresrs can have a chance of defeating stronger opponents together.
we could also make it that when people are in mental combat they can be damaged from player or the enviroment. this mean that mind battling in a massive war is not such a good idea.
as for you meditation idea red, we can make there a compass, like person 55 said (i think) that directs you to a certain thing or group of things that is decided by a command at the beginning or during the meditation.

It could be even more motivation to work together and encourage groups and alliances to form. If we used the idea of mental battle being like a PvP area, everyone involved would just be brought into this area where they could work together to fight. As for the compass, it kind of defeats the purpose of meditating, which is to see who or what is in the area. There could be another spell for actually pointing you to something, which could be applied to a compass so that it directs you to whatever you choose until you take off the enchantment or change it to another target.

You'll have to be within a few blocks of a player to start a battle of the minds. Players will be able to team up, but maybe not in the first release. We'll need an easy and quick way for people to join your mind battle, without using commands such as "/mindbattle add {playername}". We want to use as few commands as possible to make gameplay seamless. As participating players are going to be immobile in the world while the mind battle is taking place, perhaps others can right click on that player to join minds and help. This would teleport the player to the mind room where they can join the fight, however they would not be able to damage the person they are helping. We can, of course, implement the compass/meditation feature, however instead of using a command to select who or what you want to seek out, you can right click with the compass to cycle through player, dragon, villager, etc. The compass will be given to the player within the first minute of meditation, depending on their skill. It will be removed from their inventory shortly after meditation finishes. Depending on how long the player was meditating and their skill, the compass will stay in the inventory for longer after meditation finishes.

Great! yes, i think that right clicking on a player to join a mind battle would be good, but we need a way to know if someone is battling. maybe particles? i also think that there should be different arenas for different races, like an elf's mind is different from a human.

I second these thoughts. One small thing to work out though. If you are teleported to an arena, then wouldn't there be no body left where you were prior? Is it possible to just leave a model of the player (with health too) that doesn't move and takes the place of the player while that player is fighting?

I was thinking something more along the lines of a command that just tells you WHAT is in the area, which you could then use another spell to actually find/point in the direction of the target. Or we could combine these commands and make the first command return the entity name, followed by the heading and distance from player to target. The compass could also be used as a supplementary guide once you know what you are looking for and if it is in the area. But instead of you losing it, it should just slowly deplete your hunger.

Well, with the addition of 1.8, we have armour stands! witha plugin im sure we can edit them to make them work, because they are an entity with a hitbox.

So, you say that we should have a single command that has a yes/no answer which you can then compass track to find. this may be a little complicated for un-experienced players but it makes sense that you need to know if something is there before you can look for it It wouldn't be a yes/no response to the command, it would be something like: /search Saphira W 5 blocksHellomynameis99 NNE 15 blocksCreeper S 17 blocksOr if you want to limit it to a certain entity: /search Hellomynameis99 Hellomynameis99 NNE 15 blocksOr /search Ra'zac Ra'zac N 60 blocks up 20 blocksRa'zac NNE 67 blocks down 5 blocksetc. Then, if you wanted to hunt for something: while holding compass in hand: /point Ra'zac and the compass would point to the closest Ra'zac. If you right click, it would cycle through each of the possible entities returned by the parameters following point (or all nearby entities if no parameters specified) Now obviously the search and point commands would need to be limited to a certain radius depending on your magical skill, and the enchanted compasses would only work within that radius of the entity as well. This could be another magical research task, upgrading your search radius. I hope you understand my idea better now.

The player you are controlling will be teleported to the arena and another player with your name, strengths, weaknesses and inventory will spawn where you were before you were teleported. You will control yourself (at the arena) while the AFK-fake-player remains motionless where you left. Perhaps we can use some particles to show that the player is battling.
