Ok, while it isn't feasible to mine rock with wood in real life, neither is it feasible to mine a cubic meter of rock in a few seconds minecraft isn't made to be realistic, I don't really see why you would just take it out of the game.... what im saying is that we wouldn;t make it REALISTIC, we would make it more BELIEVEABLE. minecraft isn't a realistic game but we can make it feel like it has slightly more sense. Downgrading tools would also stop grinders a bit from just farming gems to sell. I agree with Lubenq, if the tools are all perfect, then people will just grind gems to get money, instead, they should get money from the quests that they will do, or bartering stuff.

Rather than downgrading tools to accomplish this, wouldn't it make more sense to just make gems and such much more rare in the map itself and in quarries etc?

no, not really. we don't want massive quarries and strip mines, we just want finding ores to take longer and be more realistic.

I think you should have nugget=copper (mentioned by nasuada when settling a dispute over chickens in book 3 or 4), bar=crown
