So I don't know what is really going on with the monetary system on the server. I know that bartering will be a huge part of it, but is there going to also be a currency that can be used to pay for things? For instance, could we have a gold standard and use modified gold nuggets as coins? We could modify the nugget tile image to look like a gold coin. To stay with Inheritance it could be called a pence or a crown. I prefer crown. I dunno. This is just a place for everyone to discuss this very important aspect of the server.

I think that this is a highly relevant question that does need to be answered, and I believe that the best answer to it would not involve using physical items as "coins". I would think that having to carry around stacks of coins all of the time would take up inventory space and be generally annoying, so I would suggest that every player has a sum of money that is contained virtually. Plus, this would make transactions much easier, and could make it so stores could be set up in such a way that the owner doesn't have to be there or even be online for an item or items to be purchased.

That could work, they would be called crowns and a shop owner could set prices for their goods in crowns.

I believe in the books it was copper, gold, crowns, etc... Maybe there could be a way to have different kinds of coins in the currency system and if you get enough of a less expensive coin it translates into a more valuable one?

Maybe there could be a way to have different kinds of coins in the currency system and if you get enough of a less expensive coin it translates into a more valuable one? With having the money be virtual, it prevents any interference with mining ores so you can set prices for them. Also, it would make exchanges easier for people to just type "/pay 50 copper" rather than going through their inventory for 50 copper. Also, maybe we could even have the money be split up into the different values while virtual, and to split it up or put them together you would have to ask another player or go to a money institute etc. However, if we want to stay true to the book and make it as realistic as possible, I'd recommend using gold nuggets, diamonds, and emeralds (modified) as different levels of currency which you have to carry around or store some place. People wouldn't bring all their money with them on a journey. They would leave some of it at home. If they stored it in a chest in their house, there would be the chance it could be stolen. Finally, you would be limited by how much you could carry, due to the limited inventory. I think doing this would be much more realistic and make for better gameplay. Another possibility would be rather than using gold, diamonds, emeralds you could use mob drops from nether mobs, since the nether is disabled. This way, there would be no interference with mined ores, and the staff would be able to control the monetary system by creating more coins or buying them back with items. Something really cool if we used coins instead of virtual money would be if you drop a coin and it despawns, the block it was on gets this value, so if someone mines it, the coin would respawn, as if you found a buried coin! This would be a really cool find every once in a while...

My understanding is that most items will be obtained through finding them in chests, and the upper tier items and more rare things will be obtained through quests. I guess we could always have a large mine in Farthen Dur that resets every few days or so, but im pretty sure most of the world will not be mineable. (Or else everyone would trash the cities and other structures)

These probably will reset every week or so, so that there is a supply of new materials, so it is something we need to consider. The more major problem that needs resolving is that if we use real items for currency rather than virtual money, what items will we use? They have to be items that nobody will ever collect due to previous uses, and an item that won't have a use on the server.

OK, so for one my understanding is, that like you say red, certain defined map ares will be mineable and (maybe?) private ares defined by mods for entrepreneurial players. these ares would reset every week or so. Note that it would be nearly impossible to completely mine out an area as tools will be more realistic in their mining speed and strip mining wouldnt be allowed. As for currency, im thinking along the lines of things like; eye of ender, ghast tears and magma cream. i know some of them are used in potions but we could just deactivate them.

I'd need a staff to verify this, but from my understanding there will be areas that are pre-made for mining, so players can collect materials and traders would have stuff to trade. It would be pretty impossible to have all resources spawn in chests and stuff because building houses and such in cities will require the player to gather materials for the building (even though it will be a predefined structure that you chose from a selection). It would be best if these areas you mine from reset every so often because otherwise obtaining materials would get harder and harder. I think those items could work since they aren't really used in anything that would be of use on the server. It wouldn't be hard to rename them and change their drop texture.

Yep, players will be able to mine certain blocks in certain areas, if they have the right tool, and these will regenerate over time. Mining will be slow and you won't always get anything from the blocks you mine, however you can increase your mining skill by, obviously, mining :-)

yes, but can we still make it that we get rid of unrealistic stuff like wood picks and stone picks? if you think about it a stone pick should be used for digging dirt, not rock. i think its possible to turn (with plugins) picks into like javelins.

I don't really see what is unrealistic about stone and wood picks... I mean, I know that in real life it's almost always metal used in mining, but that doesn't mean you can't mine at all with stone or wood picks. I think minecraft does well compensating for this with durability and speed. Also, I don't see why you would need a javelin...

Also, stone picks might work but they could still only dig dirt.

Downgrading tools would also stop grinders a bit from just farming gems to sell.
